This was an effective and informative presentation. The idea of the Trash-can being systematic yet random was interesting and was demonstrated with the use of the model. The craft and quality of model was high and was the selling factor of the design. The consideration put into creating something actually practical and usable was commendable. Use of digital imagery to show the trash-can in action was effective and brought across the other possible functions which were not apparent in just the model (eg. being functional as a hanging lamp). The references to Pirsig's reading are well noted and have been followed through (ie. decay, and systematic and random access). The use of assigned technology (laser-cutting) was to high quality. Overall, a well executed project.
First and foremost a nicely crafted model making excellent use of a variety of materials and the laser cutter. The ideas on the assorted paper, the transparencies in particular, combined with the light created a very unique effect and a great play of light and shade. The whole 'shaking tree' concept was a well thought out and intriguing idea. The design seemed a bit cluttered but this in a sense defines the project. Well done on an amazing project.
Final design prototype was presented with a high degree of quality. Visually, the ‘trash can’ set up with the notes and lighting indicated the design in current use, this was effective for us to interpret your analogies of how the ideas could be manipulated and gave a better understanding of the disorientating effects of materiality. However, it could even have been interesting to allow us to place the notes on and engage in a wide spread interactive idea sharing, this would have employed the ideas of possible flexibility the design holds, as I imagine the ‘trash can’ is very particular to the user and should have a vast variety of arrangements in which would alter the projections of ideas. Though overall excellent presentation; the visuals were successfully accompanied by an informative explanation through your design, it was also interesting was to understand the varying influences that played on your idea. Note also the more subtle approach to the use of the laser cutter and material which was interesting to see.
